Malan Noodles

Visited Expo again and dined at Malan Noodles. I was famished from visiting the annual NATAS travel fair and some of the dishes were photographed only after they had been touched.

Prawn Balls. Savoury. The ingredients were fresh, but I felt that the sliced chillies helped with the saltiness. There were initially three of them.Mango Shrimp Rolls. They were good, but the ones at Peach Garden were better. There were initially two rolls.Ooh, I liked this. The Malan Oxtail Noodles. For a $11 dish, it had better be delicious. Loads of veggies, which was good. I love beef tendon and all the jelly-like bits.
Pork Rib Noodles. The stock was apparently tasty. Our total bill came to about $30 for the two bowls of noodles, two sides and two drinks. A little pricey.
What I had for breakfast this morning. The fish cake was yum and the portion was generous. The stall vendors at Ming Garden Restaurant here in Gardens are extremely friendly. :)

Reuben Solomon's Roasted Chili Jam

A jam by Charmaine Solomon's husband.

Two words. Über shiok

Lives up to its label "Hot & Sweet".

I can't imagine what "Fiery" will be like.

Retails for less than $15 per jar at Cold Storage outlets.

Can't wait to try the other sauces.

Pasta

Ingredients:
  • Pasta
  • Olive oil
  • Minced onion
  • Minced garlic
  • Minced pork
  • Brown and white mushrooms
  • Red capsicum (the sweetest of all bell peppers)
  • Tomatoes
  • Italian seasoning
  • Ground black pepper
  • Chilli flakes
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • One bottle of Prego
  • Parmesan cheese
Simple. :) I like chunky pasta sauces.

Seaweed Shaker Fries!

A busy period means more time spent at 24 hour joints and I'm glad because Mac's seaweed shaker fries are da bomb! I was really tempted to ask them if they sold the seasoning separately. Nom, nom, nom!
I reckon that the tea and coffee has to be the least addictive items on the menu. What's late-night work-chionging without loading up on the caffeine? However, to compensate, I drink a lot of Ling Yang (Antelope Horn). The one that I usually buy costs S$5 and according to the Mister, smells like rotten eggs. The one featured below is pricier but oh so sweet and refreshing!

Lundberg Risotto

Carbs give me energy but I've been trying to find healthier forms of carbohydrates, especially after watching Food, Inc.

I came across this while I was at Cold Storage the other day and decided to give it a whirl. It didn't turn out too badly! The saltiness of the risotto went well with my sweet left-over pulled pork and the alfalfa sprouts added a nice crunch to it.

I should have added a bit more water to render an even creamier texture though.

I also tried Lundberg's Rice Cakes. Not for the faint-hearted. Try it only if you don't mind bland foods.

Slow-Cooked Pulled Pork

It looks unappetizing, but this is seriously one of the easiest and yummiest meals to make ever! I got the recipe from allrecipes.com.

Ingredients:
  1. 1.5kg of pork (I paid $43 for 3kg of pork butt aka pork shoulder)
  2. 500ml - 750ml of A & W Root Beer
  3. 1 bottle of Heinz BBQ Sauce (Regular)
Steps:
  1. Wash pork and place it in the slow cooker.
  2. Pour in root beer.
  3. Cook on high for 5-6 hours.
  4. Remove pork.
  5. Shred using fork(s).
  6. Pour away root beer.
  7. Put shredded pork back in slow cooker.
  8. Pour BBQ sauce and mix it into the pork. (I added mixed herbs and chili flakes as well.)
  9. Cook on high for 1 hour.
Serving Suggestions:
  • 1.5kg of pork can serve 12-15 people.
  • You can serve it on toasted buns (with coleslaw as recommended), use it as a filling for wraps (with lettuce or alfalfa sprouts, which we had), or even stir it into risotto.

Week before National Day 2009

I caught Sing Dollar at the Esplanade last Sunday, and we had lunch at Ichiban Boshi.I do like eating croquette. This was served with the usual Tonkatsu sauce, and a very yummy salmon dip.A plate of mixed sushi. It's missing an extra Californian roll because the Mister was terribly hungry.I loved this. It was a double salmon hana thingie. Pardon the labelling.
It came in a set of three.
The Salmon Tataki was good, but I would have preferred it better if it was slightly more chilled, instead of lukewarm. The meal came up to about 40 plus dollars. It's not a bad place to grab a bite, but I would defer to Sushi Tei if I ever need a sashimi fix.

We googled and found this gem on line for dinner that evening. The XO Fish Bee Hoon was good, but it didn't hit the umami spot for me.This is probably one of the best Prawn Paste Chicken dishes I have ever tasted in my entire life. Succulent, juicy, crispy, sinful.Name of Stall:

Only a bowl of Curry Yong Tau Foo with guotiao would make a lunch at 4pm bearable. I had this at the Anchor Point Koufu outlet.

Food for Thought

I had lunch at Food for Thought before watching a performance by the Reduced Shakespeare Company at the Drama Centre.

The bill came up to about a nearly pricey $30 for two people but given its mission statement, I figure that it's money well spent. The flavours take some getting used to, but you will find yourself extremely satisfied at the end of the meal.

The set my lunch companion the Mister had.
An up-close shot of the coriander and pumpkin soup.
FFT's known for its slow-roasted pulled pork sandwiches.
I had a tomato soup with roasted garlic. Loved the tang!
My slow-roasted pulled pork pasta, which I felt would have
tasted better if it had the same sauce the pork in the sandwiches had.

Mermaid themed Birthday Cake

Not the best picture ever, but certainly the first Mermaid themed Birthday Cake I've had, for a very special Princess. :)
